Dexter's Lucky Night

This is Dexter during one of his better days. We decided to eat in one of the Mexican Restaurants in town. He ordered most of the food and once in a while he would glance at the other table where some beautiful teen-aged girls were sitting.  One of the girls waved to him and he asked me

"Ma, do you think she likes me?" I said "Of course son, you're guapo and he smiled. He took time eating and I got bored waiting but I did not mind because those girls are around. I just forgot to take their pictures.

I can't wait for him to get better so  we all can take him places.

One time he got lucky, We went to Louisiana with the whole family and I took him to the casino while the rest stayed in the hotel room. I encouraged him to drop his name to be raffled, He did and while I was playing they announced the Jackpot Price of $2,500.00 at 11:00PM.

I said to myself who might be the lucky one this time. I heard them call Dexter's name and twice, there's a message that "You have 15 minutes to claim your prize!" I got up and run went to talk to the announcer that I have to get my son upstairs, and told them it will take a little while.

When I reached the elevator, it's not working "Use stairs"said a sign .

How can I run so fast when the room was in the 10th floor. Well, I took my shoes off, run as fast as I could and knocked on the door. Rey opened it and I told him Dexter won a prize!

He told me Dexter is asleep. I told Rey, "He needs to wake up fast  because he won $2,500.00 and he has 15 minutes to get it, or it will be raffled!"

Dexter woke up and both of us started  running downstairs barefooted, holding our shoes.

Fortunately, we made it and they give him his money. We both were tired and laughing. When we went back to the room, he gave his brother and sisters money for shopping. .

He gave his Dad money too, but he forgot to give me my balato!

I did not mind..A mother does not mind.

Manang Arsenia, for me to say that I know what you're going through would be a lie. I don't, at least not the anguish a mother goes through watching her son experience such adversity throughout most of his life. I commend you, your family and most especially, Dexter for having such perseverance and fighting spirit.

This disease has left tens of thousands of victims in its path. One is also a niece of mine, an only child to my brother. At 32, she's been diagnosed since her late teen. I'd be more than happy to donate one of my kidneys, but unfortunately, none of the immediate family member match. She's been on the donor list for quite some time and we're also praying there's a match out there before it's too late.

God bless.
